Blue tailed Indiana lizzard...???
My wife and I were in southern Indiana this past weekend at a B & B... While there, I took off through the woods, and came across a small, nearly black skink or lizzard with yellow or orange stripes, and a blue tial... Overall length was about 2 1/2 inches... I've never seen anything like this before... Can anybody tell me what it was? Thanks in advance... Dave

Hi Dave,
Is this the Skink you saw. This a male 5 line Skink. I found this one near the Kankakee river.
Here is a picture of a female 5 line Skink.
I see you live in Indiana too. I live in Porter. IN.
Take care,
Tom

Welcome to RTB
Yah probably a 5 line skink. The babies are striped with the blue tail as are the adult females. The adult males lose the color and the stripes and turn kinda blah brown and get a coppery colored lipstick look when it's breeding season (early spring)

Good thing I never got into breeding 5 line Skinks. LOL
Take care,
Tom

lol naaa you got em backwards dude. When they get the coppery lips, you can't have the males anywhere near each other. They get fairly brutal. I caught one last year at one end of my parent's porch...carried it to the other end and sat in the porch swing and let it run down my leg and hop down onto the porch. Within a split second another male shot out from between the floor boards and attacked. I got them apart and moved the male I had caught over back where I found him...lesson learned.
