Anti-Exotics Legislation in CT
okay... there's an anti-exotics legislation being suggested in CT.
here's a link to it:
State bill would ban ownership of exotic pets - NewsTimes.com
I'm just a college student studying pre-veterinary medicine. I don't particularly like or agree with this legislation but I don't know what to do to make it stop. I need help finding out what I can do to stop this heinous law.
is there anyone I can contact in connecticut that can stop this?
I don't want to sit around and allow this to pass because I don't want to report my future patients to be put in such a situation!

Re: Anti-Exotics Legislation in CT
I live in CT too... The details of the law seem vague. I think it is hard to tell at this point exactly what they will try to outlaw. I am not positive, but I assume that this law would NOT outlaw boa constrictors. Burms and Retics? That may be a different story. Hopefully that won't be the case because both are becoming more popular in the pet-trade.... It would suck to have people ripped away from their Giant snakies! Unless of course they have no business keeping them.
But I think as long as you don't have any monkeys or HOTS you'll be fine.

Re: Anti-Exotics Legislation in CT
This is an email I am sending to the CT State DEP Environment Committee Chairpersons and our local State Representative:
DEP: DEP, Attorney General Propose Legislation Banning Private Ownership Of Chimps, Other Dangerous Animals
Has this been discussed in the Environment Committee? We own a few snakes and lizards and are concerned with the details of this proposal.
"Pythons" is a general term used to describe a dangerous snake by people that have no knowledge of snakes. Pythons can range in size from 3 feet to 30+ feet. They are not venomous but kill their prey by constriction. Obviously 8+ foot constrictors can be dangerous due to their sheer strength but proper handling practices can minimize the risk (1 experienced person per 6 feet of snake).
While the woman being mauled by the chimp is a tragedy, there are far more people injured by dogs or other domestic animals. I doubt there will ever be a ban on all pets just because there is a chance they could hurt some one. All pets pose some risk, whether it be physical harm or health (sanitary).
This proposed ban is a reaction to a horrific tragedy, but a broad ban on exotic pets is an over reaction based on fear. There needs to be a better definition of what is dangerous. There are plenty of snakes and lizards that are harmless. If the DEP is allowed to make a case by case determination, the rules need to be published. If it is determined they are a "risk to society", instead of banning all exotic pets I feel there should be permits issued by the DEP, with the prospective owner to be interviewed to see if they are competent enough.
This proposal needs to be examined thoroughly and fairly and not indiscriminately put all exotic pets in one category.

Re: Anti-Exotics Legislation in CT
A version of House Bill No. 6552 with substitute language cleared the Environment Committee by a 28-2 vote on March 20 and was referred to the Office of Legislative Research and the Office of Fiscal Analysis for review. Once that is complete, it could come before the House for a vote.

Re: Anti-Exotics Legislation in CT
Thanks for the info. It would be nice if they would disclose what will be included in this ban. I'm assuming once it takes effect the only option is to surrender it to be killed. With some advance warning they could be sold to someone in another state.

Re: Anti-Exotics Legislation in CT
Based on my limited experience in this area, the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) PIJAC Home Page - Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council seems to be the most useful for getting unreasonable proposed legislation stopped.
