New cage Idea
I've had this idea kicking around for a while, just finally got a free dishwasher and proceeded to gut it. This is going to be for the spilotes but eventually I want to keep some smaller boiga or some cateyed snakes in it. I haven't quite figured out how I'm gonna heat it yet but it'll probably involve a rhp or I might be able to make a sweet dome that can house a day and night bulb.
The front is gonna be closed off with a sheet of xpvc and a acrylic door.
Any input or ideas would be appreciated.
Nate

Re: New cage Idea
you would be better off to buy finished plywood for 16.00 bucks a sheet and build your own cage rather than use a aqward dishwasher shape. IMO

Re: New cage Idea
IMO I've built more plywood cages then you could shake a stick at. I was actually looking to build a fully sealed ultralight cage. fully self contained with misting system and a recycling water system. Thanks for your opinion if you have anything constructive to say then go ahead

Re: New cage Idea
so what are you planning on using for the door, i guess since it is fiber glass it is probally relativly lightweight, the self misting idea seems pretty cool.
are you going to use the orginal door, and then make a cut out for glass to see in. it could turn out pretty cool, its always hard to see somthing differnt until its done then everyone will bel ike i want one of those. good luck and post pictures when it is completed.
how are you planning on doing the water recycling system, i would imagine the water would be "contaminated" in theory after the first run through. however you could hook it up to like a 5 gallon bucket and use that as your drawing source and you just fill that up, unless you have some type of filtration system in mind to filter out bedding poop ect that might get into your recycled water.

Re: New cage Idea
The front is gonna be be xpvc the door is gonna be plex of vinyl .I'll probably build a small sub-floor out of xpvc as well and it will contain the reservoir , filter and pump. I've been brainstorming this idea for about 2 years and finally I'm gonna realize it.

Re: New cage Idea
That's gonna be one sweet cage when it's done. I have no new ideas for you though.

Re: New cage Idea
You may want to use some screen on the top hole so you can use a heat lamp if needed. For the door you could go with 1/4" sliding doors and plastic door track. If you use a hinged door use polycarbonate as it will not crack or chip like Acrylic / Plexiglas can. Also with that size door it will bow with humidity so to strengthen it glue some c shaped aluminum channel on the outside edges of the door this will help keep it from bowing. You can also use some good magnets to help keep the door shut if you are not putting anything that is strong enough to open the door. If you use tempered glass you could also mount it like a stereo cabinet door on a pivot hinge.
Take care
Tom

Re: New cage Idea
Any way you do it. A functional cage made from a dishwasher is cool!
