Ok, I have an adorable little W. Hognose that I picked up last July at an Expo. He was always the sweetest little guy around. The last maybe two months or so, Johnnie has gotten to where he hisses everytime I pick him up. I have even seen him do the head flattening thing while hissing now. Every thing is the same, eats well, burrows normally, no new cage, substrate, etc. He doesn't have mites. Any ideas? Oh, and in case you ask, no, I do not put him back just because he hisses now. I understand the accidental postive reinforcement issues.

Could be anything at all really. A quick movement, a different color shirt, maybe he just feels like it... my hognose are like that sometimes. If he's getting to maturity age, he's growing up, maybe he's going through some personal changes. Calm handling, and patient retraining is about all you can do... but honestly, isn't it cute when they think they're big and mean? As long as he's not playing dead on you - you're not stressing him out too much.

Hi, I'm thinking of getting one of these little guys so i've been reading up a bit, sounds like he's just testing you or trying to prove his dominance, if he's not striking you with an open mouth I wouldn't worry.
