A friend of mine sustained an Eastern Diamondback bite on the left hand earlier this week. It was a captive specimen about 4.5' from South GA. This relates to the Coral Snake String in venom composition. Within 15 minutes of the bite, he had a sensation throughout his body "like when your leg falls asleep." Within an hour he went into repitory failure. The next day, he experienced renal failure. There was severe swelling on both hands (which required a couple fasciotomies on the bite hand), muscle fascilations in the face (for 3 days) chest and calves. He was given 20 vials of Wyeth Crotalidae Polyvalent (horse serum). The interesting aspect is that there was very little necrosis. This, along with the other smptoms leads one to believe that the envenomation was primarily composed of neurotoxins. This stands true on several accounts of EDBs from South GA. The almost complete lack of hemotoxic symptoms is something very serious. Unfortunately, all of the photos were on a digital camera of a friend of mine which got stolen on Sunday [img]modules/Forum/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif[/img] He is doing much better and went home yesterday. The bite resulted from a feeding response, therefore there was a good venom load injected. I have never seen an EDB bite with that little tissue damage. We keep 'em HOT here in Georgia! I am dreading a severe Canebrake bite here this year, if the EDB is that neurotaoxic! Canebrakes are notoriously worse. Just FYI.
