If you look up the late Grace Olive Wiley, she freehandled an amazing number of hots for years (incl. king cobras) and did it publicly...she mostly got away with it, well until that one little cobra. And she carefully locked it up before going to the hospital to die.
I have no problem with someone free-handling, as long as NO ONE ELSE IS ENDANGERED....the world is already overcrowded?

I worked with a guy that would bring in snakes to work all the time and let them loose in the office. At first it was funny as this big boa would cruise the shelves knocking off everything that was previously there. It was outrageous behavior not just because they were snakes, as personally I would have thought the same if someone would have brought in a big screeching parrot. I can not understand how some people get away with stuff like that, as all I have to do is fart and I get called into the office. Well he broke the camels back, one day, not with a straw but a pair of rattlesnakes. No kidding...he walked in with a pair of them into a busy office and dumped them out on the floor. You couldn't even get out of the room without going past them. That was finally it. That was so stupid.

There are some people who cannot free handle a Corn snake intelligently......yet there are some who can handle elapids like its nobody's business......but in general, free handling hots is tempting fate and a bad idea IMO.
