What scares you...this is mine!
I always watch the shows on snakes...any show. Many are about poisonous snakes, and those I take a special interest in. I know I will never own one but I find them so amazing. The toxicity of the venom is what I find so amazing and what it is capable of doing. I know nothing of poisonous snakes, but am aware of the many species. The one that freaks me out more than anything else is the Fer-de-lance.
These dudes are really aggressive, but if you would see what the venom does to human tissue you would really be scared.
There are many of you that know WAY more than I do...but I would rate this as one of the baddest snakes to get bit by. What do you think?

Re: What scares you...this is mine!
Yes...here is one thing I found on them.
They are much feared because their venom is a hemotoxin that is particularly lethal and fast-acting. The fatality rate used to be high, but nowadays treatment is usually possible if the victim receives medical attention soon enough. Venom yield averages 124 mg, although it may be as much as 342 mg. The fatal dose in humans is just 62 mg.
Commonly, bites from this snake to humans cause symptoms including nausea, blackouts, and paralysis. In almost all cases, temporary or sometimes permanent loss of local or 'short term' memory were reported. Extended hospital stays, as well as weight loss of up to fifteen pounds have been reported.
The enzyme, reptilase (batroxobin), derived from this snake's venom is used in modern medical laboratories to measure fibrinogen levels and to measure blood coagulation capability. The test is considered to be a replacement for Thrombin Time, and is used when heparin is present in the sample. The enzyme is unaffected by heparin.

Just so you know that second pic you posted I believe is a Bushmaster.
Take care,

The second pic is definitely not a Bushmaster.....its a Bothrops atrox (Fer De Lance). Lachesis muta are the Bushmasters.....they look totally different.

Re: What scares you...this is mine!
And I do not have any inherent fears of venomous snakes as long as they are at a safe distance. I will be seeking them out in Costa Rica. Spiders, however, scare the bejeezus out of me. If I see one the size of a dinner plate over there, I will probably have a heart attack on the spot. And if it's because I go through a web on one of the zipline tours, they will not be able to revive me.

There are also some humans that I wouldn't get near with a 10-foot pole.

I met a lady once that was covered in little round marks. I asked someone how she got the marks and they said it was from being touched with a ten foot pole.
