CBB Sistrurus miliarius barbouri

From my "giant" locality if Pigmies! Both mom and dad are each 28 inches long and feed on small rats. The adults are from Hendry County, FL. They bred on October 16th and she gave birth sometime on June 13th late at night. It's a small litter of only four, but each neonate is 8 inches long! They're about the size of yearlings.

and the neonates

Venomoids? These snakes are not venomoids! Many species are immune to their own venom, but some species aren't. I've seen Sistrurus bite each other with no ill effects.

Re: CBB Sistrurus miliarius barbouri

Great lookin' rattlers!

It has been documented that in captivity the neonates will hide behind the mother and she protects them by rattling and striking.

Out of curiosity, have you witnessed this behavior?

Re: CBB Sistrurus miliarius barbouri

too cute

and wow, 8"

the area that they are from, is there a lack of small lizards or frogs or something?

I am curious as to what factors you may have seen/heard of in that locale that drove the evolution into larger animals, or if its just random genetics.

Re: CBB Sistrurus miliarius barbouri

The area borders Sugarcane fields, so we assume that many are feeding on rodents fairly quickly from birth. There's just as many anoles and frogs but the canefields have a healthy rodent population. A friend of mine caught three neonates from this road last August and they all took day old pinks as soon as he set them up.

Beautiful Bro. Great looking little thorns. I am curious if the CB babies from that area are more prone to take pinks than populations that are more prone to lizard prey.
