Random Update pics:
A few updated pics from my snake room:
Did a little cage rearranging so some of the snakes had photo ops:
SC Cb09 Canebrake (C. horridus) from Joe Switalski..Love this little snake!!! It's now pounding rat pinks. Got it in March and it was on fuzzies.
Female Sulawesi Wagler's Viper (T. subannulatus)
Male Sulawesi Wagler's
Size comparison of the pair, male is the little one.
The PURP: (Cryptelytrops purpuromaculatus)
WAAAAAAAAHhhh I don't wanna new cage!!
Such a brat
*sniff* AM NOT!
Female Atheris squamigera from Tom Crutchfield
male squam from Joe Switalski The pair I got from him are beasts. They are excellent feeders, and absolutely NOTHING phases them!
[
I'll get some pics up of my others as I can:
Still have 10 more venomous snakes, and 7 non vens as well as a Tegu & Ig.

Thanks guys! I never thought that stupid purp would EVER eat at first. I think it was a good month plus before it ate. I lost a lot of my old feeding records on my Dell motherboard fry.
The trick to some of the arboreals is not to just to tick them off enough they strike the prey, but REALLY irritate them so they strike and hang on..lol
The purp, I think I got lucky.. I just happened to wedge the pinky mouse down it's throat on a strike.

Re: Random Update pics:
Good question:
I really don't have a big interesting story behind it. I see them as just another type of snake to admire or work with.
I love all animals (except worms and slugs..) My other interest is falconry, and I'm trying to learn more about apprenticeship, care, and housing.
As far as venomous species go, I've kept nonvens for about 6-7yrs. Started out with a Ball Python. During that time I learned about basic husbandry & snake behaviors.
I hung out with nonvenomous and venomous keepers. I spent time online meeting people locally and all over the world. Some encouraged me, some didn't. I took in a few unwanted/abused commonly kept animals and cared for them. Some made it, some were too far gone when I got them.
When I decided to work with venomous, I spent time outside field herping with a few experienced herpers just looking for & photographing native species.
I visited local friends: checked out the pros and cons of their set ups, watched them work with their venomous, talked to other keepers online, read BWs book, checked out library books about snakes around the world, acquired caging and handling equipment. In fact, I STILL do all of these things. lol I was like a SPONGE absorbing all the information about housing, safety, and caring for venomous snakes.
I started out with native Copperheads. My first was given to me by a friend. My 2nd different species of venomous snake came about a year later and was a Pigmy rattler given to me by the president of the local herp society. It was a CB neonate from a WC mom. Had to feed it tiny cricket frogs and feeder fish at first. Thankfully we lived near a pond! Sadly it was part of a die off I had in my collection about a year ago.
Then I purchased the N. Pacific & Purp. LOL Yes, the PURP was my FIRST arboreal!! I've had them both about 2-2.5 years?
As far as venomous arboreals, I blame a few friends of mine for posting pics of Atheris. I was hooked from the first photo of A. hispida. I will ONE DAY work with those. I'm waiting for someone to figure out the specifics on keeping them alive. I'd hate to get a pair and have them roll because I didn't have a clue what I was doing.
Anyways, I don't keep hots because they are hots. I keep Atheris because I like those snakes. In other words, I'd still have the same draw to these particular snakes if they'd been born without venom. I love their attitudes, their appearance, and their overall behaviors.
Hope that explains some of it.

Re: Random Update pics:
I agree Really like the Red Hot ATBs and Chondros as well.
Something about the little faces of the squams and their roughed up scales really appeals to me.
I also love any of the vipers with the "horns" or "eyelashes" lol.

Your purp's pictures are probably my favorite. he always looks like he's up to NO GOOD, ever. What is a typical reaction from a bite from them?

I'm sort of jealous of people who take the plunge into hot keeping...maybe I would have a long time ago if I didn't live in FL. They are really such remarkable creatures, especially the arboreals. As always, thanks for sharing

why is FL keeping you from getting into hots? that is where most venomous keepers are from....
