My First Venemous!!
I have been wanting to get into the hobby of owning venemous reptiles.
So this past weekend I decided to go for it & got this little girl.
She is a Copperhead, but im wondering which type she is. I caught her at a farm in North Texas to keep her from being killed. Im thinking shes a Broad Banded but im not sure.
So I have her in a aquarium with sliding locking lid, many brached to lounge under and ive got her temp at 90 degrees.
Also, is a weekly feeding ok on these guys or should they feed more often?
For being wild caught she is a great girl, she ate the first time I offered her food and hasnt refused a meal since.
Any other information on Copperheads would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, im gunna try and upload a picture of her but I dont know that it will work.

Re: My First Venemous!!
it is a broad banded, but 90 degree 's is too hot.
These are nocturnal snakes that are active when the air temps are in the high 70's and low 80's.
They seem to adapt just fine to captivity from what I have seen with friends who have kept them.

Re: My First Venemous!!
The sliding/locking lid... is it screen? If so, Take a piece of 1/4 inch plexi that will fit over the screen and can be glued to the frame, drill some hills in it for ventilation (small holes and plenty of them) and glue it over the screen so it's on top. This will prevent you or anyone else from being envenomated through the screen.

Re: My First Venemous!!
The temp is only 90 during the day, they drop to the high 70s in the evening and night. I just figured they liked it hot since she was found in Texas. I will drop her daytime heat to the 80s.
I decided to start with a copperhead since their venom is less toxic then a lot of the others I have been interested in.
I am also amazed and how calm she is considering she just came out of the wild last Saturday 5/15/10.
Thanks for all your help!!

Don't forget to read the epic "It's only a copperhead" thread. B W's experience was illuminating at the very least.

Re: My First Venemous!!
Is it just me or does her lower half look a little plump?
Remember the more crap you have in the cage to make it "nice" for it, the more crap you have to contend with when trying to get it out. And don't let the "calm" disposition fool you. It only takes a split second to have a bad day.
I would highly recommend reading some material on keeping venomous safely in captivity.

Re: My First Venemous!!
I'm gonna be a rusty wheel. I am 16 don't keep hots and know copperhead sp. I suggest before keeping a hot, you know which one you are getting. I mean a hot in one split second can kill you or worse. I mean I mention my age because I want to keep hots far down the road and I am starting to research. Maybe you should contact local wildlife agency or rescues. Or just release it near by.

Are copperheads egg layers or live birth? She's very pretty, but as others have stated, be careful
