Weekend herping.
Went out last night and ran into loads and loads of canebrakes. This is one of three that I found. Two other people I know were out and all found multiples too. Not a bad night's haul.
.

.

.
And just for craps and giggles here's a pair of ribbons I found mating in the middle of the road....worst date EVER.

Nice!
Of course "canebrake rattlesnakes" do not currently exist.

Re: Weekend herping.
Awesome C. Horridus Atricaudatus (even though this isn't what they are considered right now). Hope a couple of friends and I find some this weekend.

Re: Weekend herping.
I dont care what Wuster says, they are different species. There is just to many things different between them for them to be considered the same. I dont think that a species should be solely determined on DNA analysis but also toxicology and pattern/color variation...

I agree. There is a difference. In my opinion, The main 3 are locality, size, and toxicity of their venom.

How else, other than DNA are we to differentiate between species? By logical extension of your argument, there are a myriad of different species of humans on this planet, if you use the argument of colour, etc to determine a different species. DNA analysis is the defining means of determining differing species. An example, work has been completed in the UK that has found a new species of African venomous snake, I'm not at liberty to say any more about it, other than it looks exactly the same as the "other" species, but DNA analysis has shown it to be separate.
If we separated species on account of colour variations and venom composition, then the taxonomy would just go haywire. If one animal migrated into a different area and over time adapted it's colour and venom to suit the prevailing conditions there, you would have it that it had "evolved" into a new species?

Re: Weekend herping.
Taxonomy has always been haywire. I agree with Snakeguy - Canes look TOTALLY different from timbers, dna be darned.

another example, Atheris squamigera, they come in a range of colours, reds, yellows, blue, green, even black, but they are the same species, no doubt about it, Bothreichis schlegelli.... yellow, green, red, orange........
Dendroaspis polylepis......Tanzanian: Brown with pale banding, South African, dark uniform gunmetal grey/green, no bands...different look, same species
The list could go on and on, however, testing has shown that Timbers and Canebrakes are in fact the same species which have evolved different colouration to adapt to their environment....

Re: Weekend herping.
Ok, well then I resort to the totally mature reasoning that they're different because I say so.
In all seriousness, however, taxonomy means little to me, it's always changing and is being argued one way or the other between those who need to file things in categories. And that's ok and all, just doesn't move me personally one way or the other.
