I had no idea the problem was that bad. It was very eye-opening, and makes me respect the folks who milk snakes for venom all the more. Not a job I could do, but I'm so thankful there are some people out there with the guts to do it. And it is frustrating all the hoops the hospitals have to go through. What can we do from here?

As a side note, while I was watching the movie, my friend called right after the guy got bitten. I was unable to really concentrate on the conversation, because all I could think was DOES HE MAKE IT??? HE CAN'T DIE!!! DON'T LET HIM DIE!!!

I’m sure some members will appreciate young James posting this information here.
But let me add some information:
David Williams is a good personal friend of mine and in fact he was at LSTM on Thursday along with Mark O’Shea discussing the situation in PNG. David has made a good recovery but is still not 100%.
Venom extraction is highly skilled and dangerous procedure. I know Staff at London Zoo used to give public displays of venom extractions, but for about the last 15 years there has only been one person routinely extracting venom..... and that is me! This is done for venom research purposes but I can tell you that the venom I have extracted from Echis ocellatus Carpet Vipers has gone on to help save the lives of at least 12,500 West Africans over the last few years, so the efforts of our small Unit are proving worthwhile.
James, there is absolutely NO way that you ever be allowed to work in the UK with venomous snakes, less still be permitted to extract venom from any! And this is not just me saying this! It is the opinion of David Williams, Mark O’Shea, Wolfgang Wuster, Bryan Grieg Fry and many other top international Herpetologists .....
It may seem that we are picking on this “armchair expert” of a lad (who has never even kept any reptiles) but the fact is a large proportion of the venomous community are sick to death of him...just ask Morti (admin of this site) if you don’t believe us.

What an informative video. Thanks for sharing. Those snakes are still beautiful albeit deadly. Curious what they do with the snakes after getting their venom. Do you know?

I also liked the informal way the Minister of Health walked into the pharmacy and said, "I'm the Minister of Health. I believe you are selling illegal antivenom. I don't like that. Please stop doing it," and then just walks out. (I'm sure that really deterred them....). Don't you wish the considerate approach worked with criminals in this country? "Excuse me, I really don't like the fact that you have a gun in my face, and you're about to rob my house. Would you mind leaving?"
