Gaboon Viper Found
This morning on channel 6 news here in Maine -southern part of state- they had a news flash that some IDIOT had let loose a Gaboon Viper and luckily for the public, unluckily for the snake it froze to death because of the winter temps. The photo showed a large snake and they had a Game Warden using a pencil to show just how large its fangs were for the added scare factor. What in the world could the -BAD LANGUAGE- could of a so called person been thinking turning loose a snake like that, just imagine the mayhem & death a snake like that could of caused if it was let loose in the summer. Reasons and acts like this is whats causing us RESPONSIBLE keepers problems and giving the nay sayers ammo against us.

Re: Gaboon Viper Found
Of course come spring time when the native snake emerge from hibernation, wonder how many "baby gaboons" will be killed.

well, i assume I know the answer, but sometimes it doesn't always work that way.
some guy had some cobras escape at an apartment complex near my work in Dallas a few years back, and the city made every effort to capture them alive, and did.

Re: Gaboon Viper Found
Well its started as we all knew it would....this morning they replayed it and then started in on how NON-native species have no right to be allowed in as this is the result and they added in the ole' "just think of if it were summer" ..blah, blah, one idiot is all it takes to start mass hysteria and ruin it for us responsible owners. I could just imagine how bad it would of been if we weren't such a cold weather state and it had been Southern Florida warm and the potential issues that could have arisen from this idiots actions.

Re: Gaboon Viper Found
Until something equally ridiculous and sensational happens they will continue to beat a dead horse so to speak. Not saying it's not a big deal, whoever "lost" it needs to be kicked in the back of the head, but there's going to be a general public outcry against snakes until people are given something else to be outraged at.

Re: Gaboon Viper Found
i feel bed for the snake but i am also very glad it was not found in fl we have more then enough problems with snakes here and the last thing we need is a viper like that running around.... its already open hunting season on pythons so a snake like that would cause doom for all snake owners in fl....

Re: Gaboon Viper Found
We had a case here in the late 90’s IIRC... a pair of Bothrops alternatus where donated to us by the RSPCA / Local Authority. They had been dumped on someone’s doorstep by an unknown person.

Re: Gaboon Viper Found
IIRC = If I Recall Correctly
I am also willing to bet the snake was a plant.... too many of these popping up lately...
