Question about hibernation traits of some species
I was thinking about how the old rule pretty much is that snakes like to live alone instead of with other snakes. But the example is that a couple of species that I know about in particular will hibernate in somewhat large colonies/dens. The 2 that come to mind are the Agkistrodon contortrix(a.k.a. copperhead) and Crotalus horridus(a.k.a. the timber rattlesnake). I know that these 2 species / sub-species can and often do this very thing. Why is that? What other species have been known to hibernate in large colonies/dens? Do any colubrids do this?
Trying to learn a little something.
