I really dig these little snakes. The males are a little more spastic hooking, but the females are nippier..Go figure.

Re: Sick of squams...

It's not a very well studied venom, it is primarily hemotoxic but from a study Dr Fry has done he found it actually had neurotoxins as well.

Bites have caused fatalities. Some people claim echis a/v is beneficial, but it is my understanding that's sort of a "hit or miss".

On an SHHS thread, Dr Fry (BGF=Bryan Grieg Fry) aka VenomDoc responded to a similar question regarding Atheris envenomations by saying:
Quote:
What is known, however, is that the Atheris venoms have devastating effects upon the blood chemistry (as does Proatheris). One of my students studied A. squamiger and it was also quite nicely neurotoxic as well (we didn't expect this).

Atheris is a good example of snakes that were regarded as having only mild venom based off of zero evidence (one way or the other). However, the few well documented clinical cases certainly changed this perception. A bite in Germany was the subject of some very nice followup work by Mebs and co. that confirmed the very potent actions of the crude venom.
The thread is here: Atheris Envenomation - Experts Forum at VenomousReptiles.org

Yeah that's about as clear as mud.

Re: Sick of squams...

lol..Took me forever to type that..and I saw where you posted BGF, and I thought..YEP!
Suppose I coulda just linked it, ah well.

I was surprised to read about the neurotoxicity of these, and the contradiction to reactivity to echis & S. Af. polyvalents, as everything I've seen regurged online (and been guilty of reposting myself) has indicated these are effective.
See if I spread THAT info again.

I'm really more worried about the purp. The aggressive temperment makes a big difference in risk assesment, IMO.
