I have been seeing adds on the net for venemoid snakes and have some questions regarding these.
How can you tell you are really getting a venemoid? They are a lot more expensive than hot snakes. Someone could mark it up and misrepresent the snake. What if you bought a venemoid and it turns out to be hot? That's a scary thought. Can these be handled? I mean, they still have fangs. Can't that give you a really nasty puncture? Doesn't the venom help the snake digest a meal? Wouldn't the removal cause eating problems? Does this procedure cause scarring? Does doing this to the snake severely shorten it's lifespan as opposed to one that has not had the procedure done?
I am not trying to cause a stir here. I know this can be a touchy subject. I am just really curious about these and trying to get educated about them.
Thanks a bunch.

You just pointed out all the reasons not to support or purchase venomoids.
Some things are just not meant to be altered or contained for captivity.
Yes it can scar,
no you dont know if it is really a venomoid,
yes it is there to aid in digestion,
should I go on?

Hey, Matt....at least he stopped, thought about it and then came to ask some very good questions. I'd say he's got potential

I am highly opposed to mutilating venemous snakes for all the reasons you mentioned.

I have an adult puff adder, his fangs are a little over an inch long...
the first time I fed him he struck so hard I thought he would break the glass!!
Venom or no venom...I don't want him biting me!!
no he's not a venomoid,
I don't believe mutilating snakes to make them venomoid is right...
I also don't think lambasting people who are "pro-venomoid" helps anything...
See KS's ven forum for some classic examples...lol

I don't want this thread to turn into one of the threads that I have seen on Kingsnake.com when someone posts about venemoids so I am going to try and clarify my original post before that happens.
First, I have 2 small children so I would never risk keeping a venemous (or venemoid) snake in the house. I won't even take a chance with the so-called "harmless" rear-fanged snakes. Second, the state I live in would never allow me to keep one even if I wanted to.
I apologize if my interest in this has offended anyone.
This topic really intrigues me and I was just looking for some information on it.
I do not mean to cause any problems.
Once again, I do not want to upset anyone, I am just trying to get some information on this topic.
Thanks.

The people here are not as high strung as those on KS...we can all discuss a topic we disagree on w/out namecalling, threats, etc...(see the various "religious" discussions that have raged).
Some people are just waiting to be offended...don't let that stop you from asking. The only venomoid ? I disagree with is the one asked just to start some trouble. And if folks would not get their underwear in a bunch over this issue the trouble makers would just end up being frustrated!

Nature has a funny way of adjusting to about anything. Venomoids are created in one of two ways. One, the venom ducts are severed and cauderized. Two, the entire venom gland is removed. I have ran accross many voids and still treat them as hots. I think of it as basically putting a revolver to your head and pulling the trigger because someone told you it was not loaded. Voids (venomoids) have had a history of regaining thier envenomation ability. Additionally, any young produced by voids will be HOT! As for digestion...... touchy subject. But my research has found that there is little to no difference in overall health and longevity of voinds compared to their "armed" counterparts. That is of course assuming that they are being fed Prekilled prey. I do don aggree with voids, just as i dont declaw cats. But that is my opinion. I just feel that those that choose to own a venomoid should do some serious research, know who did the surgery and when, and get authentication. Then, personally, i would try to milk it at least every few months to make sure that the surgery is holding. But, I would not buy one, I would only have one if it was a rescue or confiscated form someones collection.
BTW: This is much more laid back than KS
