Although I don't plan on owning any hot snakes any time soon, I have been thinking about joining a hot herp society just to be involved in conservation and education. I wanted to get some feedback from people about this before I jump head first into it. Should my unwillingness to own (not work with, I'm willing to do that) hots keep me from being part of a hot herp society?
Be honest with your thoughts on this. If it would make me a pariah among hot keepers I can deal with that...but I would like to know where I stand.

I don't see why it would matter. You think all these guys running around wearing NASCAR hats and jackets actually drive racecars for a living?

Personally, I think they would respect you for wanting to help and for doing the right thing before getting an actual hot.
Kindof like we respect people who show up here and say "I am thinking of getting a boa in the future, help me get my setup right" more than the ones who say "I just got a Boa... now what?".
Even though you don't currently keep hots and may never do so, I think they will respect your interest in them and you decision not to keep them.
Good luck!

LMAO...not at all but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be frowned upon. I really don't see any problems with it myself, but wondered if there may be a feeling of "non-commitance" from those that do own and do it all. I imagine the majority of people feel just like the three of us, but I would like to hear others opininons.

Serious hot keepers would respect your decision. Those that own hots merely to show off are the only one that would frown on it. Do you really care what those kinds of people think?
Just ask BW... he'll tell you....

The fact that you want to actually "learn before you get" is something that we don't see enough of. I think you would be welcomed into any hot herp society. There is nothing wrong with not keeping hots. It just shows that you care about hot herps even though you are not quite ready to posses them. Good Luck with whatever happens!! It's funny this came up. I was talking to a hot keeper/breeder friend of mine about a week ago about the same thing. We won't keep hots but I am still fascinated by them. He invited me to the local "hot" meeting and said I could help him out at the shop when I have time. I think you'll find that most of them hot folks will welcome you in.
