First HOT
Im contemplating about getting my first hot herp. Ive worked with black widows, brown recluse, Black fat tail scorps, death stalkers, and other very venomous inverts, but i want a Hot snake. I live in las vegas, and the only thing i can have is basically albino versions of local species, and the only ones i have seen available are Crotalus atrox. What do you think about that being my first hot?

Re: First HOT
Most keepers are not going to take you seriously since beginning and hot is often seen as an oxymoron.

Re: First HOT
Working with medically significant arachnids doesn't constitute a jump to your "first hot". My best advise is to find a keeper in your area and work with that person for a minimum of a year.

Re: First HOT
Yeah, all of that stuff you have been working with is great to learn, but a rattlesnake will KILL YOU DEAD with a quickness. Not just make you sick for a few days. And snakes are very fast and have a long reach. My suggestion is to apprentice under somebody who is an experienced hot keeper. You won't need to come to forums and ask after that.

Re: First HOT
Yep! Find a mentor who is willing to teach you how to handle hots and give you "hot hours". I know in Florida you have to have 1000 signed off hours with a hot to be able to get your license to own one. Your mentor will help you figure out when you're ready to keep your own venomous snake, or if you should even keep one in the first place.

Re: First HOT
i agree. i have had and worked with many very dangerous hots in my time. if you are 17 i didnt check then you have plenty of time. you need to work with someone that has alot of experience. also go out and look for some in the wild. dont mess with them, but just observe them from a very safe distance. take a mouse with you and toss it to em from a good distance away. you will see how fast these guys are and what their venom can do.

Re: First HOT
oy vey, what's with these kids wanting to jump into hots?
You have your whole life ahead of you. Spend MANY years training with a professional before even considering keeping a venomous snake. Otherwise, at your age, it's not fair to the animal, and it's not fair to us, the reptile community as a whole if yet another news headline pops up about someone's fatal encounter with a venomous snake.
