Night of the Canebrakes
Took a trip up to North Florida this weekend to see what snakes have started moving. The end of August through Septemeber is prime herping season and it's also when the babies are born. After dealing with subpar conditions yesterday (overcast and a high of 85 degrees), at about 6:30 pm, the first "good snake" of the day crawled on to the pavement.

Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) neonate, Columbia County, Florida. This was the last horridus I found that evening. Another friend of mine who was on some of the other roads found four neonates.
Florida Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon p. conanti) One of about twenty! Due to excessive flooding the region suffered from Tropical Storm Fay, there was no shortage of Agkistrodon.
Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus m. barbouri) adult, Columbia County, Florida.

Re: Night of the Canebrakes
Wow I'm only an hour south of there and we don't even have canebrakes to my knowledge. Pygmies are pretty rare too but cottonmouths are everywhere. Good stuff!
