I keep snakes too. So because I keep lizard I cannot post on a hots forum? If you knew a whole lot about snakes then why do you have to ask what the best beginner is?
Why did you ask on the monitor forum what the best beginner is?

I'm not talking about a sluggish strike. Almost every snake has a speedy strike, that's their livelyhood. I meant they wouldn't be jumping out at you when you open the enclosure door. I knew a guy that had an enclosure with a Cape Cobra. The snake jumped out right into him. Luckily he calmly stayed put and didn't get bit.

A harmless question? Keeping hots is not harmless
I understand asking how to keep something but if your asking for the best beginner to me it just means you need to do more research.

Asking questions is research. What is any of this to you any way? David goes around asking questions to learn. You just go around being judgemental and stirring stuff up that you don't even know about.

I quit putting what I keep on the list because its too long. From my experience the woma's are 1000X times easier to keep than geckos. I keep some very delicate species of geckos that require very specific care so just because I keep geckos does not mean I do not know about other reptiles.

Who said I sat in front of a computer and programmed all day? I hate programming and refuse to do it.

Sigh, I am not trying to stir things up and I could care less what you think of me Thomas. I have a friend who keeps hots, so yes I do know something about keeping hots. I do not need to prove anything on forums. Asking what is a good beginner usually always means that there is more research to do. Yes, I have asked what is the better species on forums but never asked about something that could kill me in one bite.

Haha what would be the difference here?
Now my opinions in relevance to the question at hand..

Most keepers with experience will dodge this question all day long because there is not really a simple answer. They don't want to say "Species X is a great hot to start with" because that can be misunderstood to mean "You, the reader, should keep species X". It is considered by many to be dangerous advice.
Let's take copperheads as an example. Just because you Probably won't die from a copperhead bite doesn't mean that it will be a fun and pleasant experience. Intense pain and the potential for necrosis are the results of an envenomation from a copper. It does NOT sound like fun to me.
Also, the notion that a "Calm" hot is the best idea is kind of debatable too. Calm snakes lead to complacency in the keeper. Complacency leads to taking shortcuts. Shortcuts lead to getting bitten. You always know where you stand with an aggressive snake... preferably you stand on the far side of a long hook.
The best Plan to learn how to care for hots is to apprentice with an excellent hot keeper, learn everything you can from them, and then follow their advice. No one here can tell you what is the best "Beginner" hot for you... it is something you are going to have to learn on your own if you want to do it right.
Oh and Thomas, you are absolutely correct in that a Mamba or a Bushmaster are among the worst "Beginner Hots", but that wasn't the question now was it?
|
Morti, I completely agree with you, and I am very glad to see you bold the work “probably” to try and get the point across.. take note of this everyone else who didn’t catch that! Just because it happens rarely doesn’t mean it cant happen.. also look at your allergies, you may not be able to take proper doses of anti-venom if you have an allergy to one of its components and if they try to administer it and you do have an allergic reaction it could make matters 10 times worse then they already were, a lot of people don’t think about that aspect of it, but when it comes to working with deadly animals you need to take into consideration EVERY aspect of it and be sure not to over look anything. In my opinion the only way to be sure you have been prepared correctly is to get a good trustable mentor and learn from them. And even with the “beginner hots that sure probably wont kill you, you need to keep in mind they could kill you and treat them with the respect they deserve. If your going to do this do it right, research all different kinds of hots, look at their habitats, living conditions, toxicity, talk to as many experienced hot keepers as you can, and try to find a good mentor. If you need help finding a mentor, go to youtube and search for viperkeeper message him and ask him to help find you a good mentor in your area and he will do all in his power to find you one. I don’t necessarily agree with all his safety procedures he follows or doesn’t follow maybe the better way of saying it, but he will help you to find a mentor if you ask him to.
I haven’t read the rest of the posts yet but when I do if I think of anything else ill be sure to post it!
Thanks :]
