The statement that the best beginner hot is someone else's is 100% correct.

Most keepers with experience will dodge this question all day long because there is not really a simple answer. They don't want to say "Species X is a great hot to start with" because that can be misunderstood to mean "You, the reader, should keep species X". It is considered by many to be dangerous advice.

Let's take copperheads as an example. Just because you Probably won't die from a copperhead bite doesn't mean that it will be a fun and pleasant experience. Intense pain and the potential for necrosis are the results of an envenomation from a copper. It does NOT sound like fun to me.

Also, the notion that a "Calm" hot is the best idea is kind of debatable too. Calm snakes lead to complacency in the keeper. Complacency leads to taking shortcuts. Shortcuts lead to getting bitten. You always know where you stand with an aggressive snake... preferably you stand on the far side of a long hook.

The best Plan to learn how to care for hots is to apprentice with an excellent hot keeper, learn everything you can from them, and then follow their advice. No one here can tell you what is the best "Beginner" hot for you... it is something you are going to have to learn on your own if you want to do it right.

Oh and Thomas, you are absolutely correct in that a Mamba or a Bushmaster are among the worst "Beginner Hots", but that wasn't the question now was it?

I fel as though hots arer like guns. If you get shot with a 300 wetherby magnum you will most likley die. But if you get shot with a .22 calibur you will live and take more precautions. And starting wih a hpot of less venom is better than one with more
