Re: Fer-de -lance

Bothrops atrox is the true Fer-de-Lance. But, many of the other Bothrops species are called "Fer-de-Lance". For example in Costa Rica, the Tericopelo (Bothrops asper) is called Fer-de-Lance by many of the locals. Below is a photo of my captive Bothrops atrox, from Trinidad.

and here is a Terciopelo (Bothrops asper) found in Matapalo, Costa Rica in March 2008.

Re: Fer-de -lance

Nice pics, Fer-de-lances are my favorite snake, I plan on working with one in the far, far future. I also like Bothrops asper, I was always under the impression that was the "real fer-de-lance." Bothrops are supposedly the mambas of the viper world or the most feared of the vipers. How would you say Bothrops are on an agression scale FlVenom?

The "real" Fer de Lance is actually the Martinique Lancehead (Bothrops lanceolatus ) from the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles. The venom of this species is absolutely horrible, in which antivenom isn't really effective at all. Many of the bite victims die due to cerebral haemorrhage. Out of all the snakes I keep, I consider Bothrops right up in the top three of "high risk species", the other two would be Dendroaspis and Oxyuranus. They're extremely unpredictable and have incredible agility. The size of their fangs is scary, with many adult specimens possessing up to 1 inch fangs. Many of them will lay motionless until something spooks them...then watch out

Since 2004, I've found and photographed a number of Bothrops asper in Costa Rica. With the exception of a few, all were easy going until disturbed. Locals hate them..with a passion. Back in December, a lodge owner we know Costa Rica had a guest get bit by a five foot B. asper. It was bad, and the kid almost lost his leg. He was hiking up along a creekbed to a waterfall and stepped right on it. Below is a photo of an adult six foot female found in the very same creekbed in April 2004.

and another found in the bathroom at our camp last May. She was being escorted across the Rio Tigre.
