Re: Florida Cottonmouth
So why do they call them cottonmouths? That specimen answers the question nicely.

Re: Florida Cottonmouth
Beautiful specimen are they as lay back as I have heard. It is my understanding they do not deserve their reputation as being overly defensive.

some are, some aren't and it goes for all subspecies. the meanest snake i've ever seen was a 17lb florida cottonmouth that my friend had but i had a female florida cottonmouth that showed no defensive behavior even once in her life.
in the swamps in my area, the eastern cottonmouths (or intergrades, whatever they are) are mostly laid back and easily tailed for pictures without even the inclination to get away, much less be defensive, but about 1/4 of them are totally psycho, both launching from the "cottonmouth pose" into a strike and heavy tail shaking.
that 17lb florida cotton mentioned above is around 15 years old, 12 in captivity so far, and EVERY single time he sees a human he goes to striking and puffing up. VERY VERY aggressive and lived most of his life in a box that he couldn't see out of. they tried using him for demonstrations but he would strike repeatedly at the glass cages and bloody his face up and it was just going to end up killing him.
his name was tapeworm too, because he'd either eat because he was hungry or just because he could. ate 3 females that were supposed to be his girlfriends (one was 49" long, but he swallowed her up).
that's why i love cottons, they're totally capable of being puppies or rabid hyenas lol.
