I would have to say any snake from the elapid family. I have roughly 14 years experience with reptiles the past eight years have been with hots. My opinion is that cobras are easier to handle than rattlesnakes. They are more predicable than rattlesnakes.
I did read some of the posts. Most of you said about safety and kids. That is great that everyone has a level head on here!!! I am new to this forum and website. I think this is better than KS. Anyway I believe you can have hots with kids. I have a lockable 576 SF room. Here is a link to see some pictures: http://photos.yahoo.com/reptilelair
There you will find a whole bunch of pics, anywhere from garter snakes to cobras and even some crocodilians.
If you have any question you can email me at:
Elapid@reptile-lair.com
Website: http://reptile-lair.com
Check out my website, it has alot of info there. I am still adding things to it.
Talk to everyone soon

My first venomous snake was a two and 1/2 ft Cape Cobra. I then got a pair of Trans-Pecos Copperheads.(Awsome snakes)Then a Gaboon Viper and a pair of Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnakes came my way. all were cool. I have also kept copper heads that I caught on job sites and relocated to prevent them from being killed.I really enjoy keeping the venomous stuff(what a rush!!!!)At the present moment I don't have any.(Due to the fact of having two little boys who want to be just like Daddy and love their snakes.)

Hands down for me would be a Black Mamba. Who wouldn't want a snake that can kill an elephant?!??!
Bry did say that toxicity etc. didn't matter
Realistically, a southern copperhead, I love the beauty of their pattern. If I did get bit, there's a good chance I'm not going to die.
Hey, reptiledude! Welcome to RTB. Good to see another NCer! I just moved to winston from Charlotte in January.

I can't keep any hots where I live, but if I was considering any type of hot I suppose it would be a yellow phase eyelash viper. Even then I don't know if I would trust myself... I would have to find someone who keeps then and knows what he is doing to learn under first.

Any hot?... A gaboon, or a cobra of some type.. Thats just if I could narrow it down to one.. Id love to keep a few rattlers, copperheads I have, and love them... um eyelash vipers Ive always wanted to try.. basicly any type of tree viper, they're ALL beautiful beyond words... Most likely I would take the KING of them all...the mighty KING COBRA... Ive read stories about people walking through the forests, and having one rear up hooded, and looking them straight in their eyes at eye-level.... how wild would that be?!

That would be a very hard choice. Eastern diamondbacks are just awesome, so are the gaboon vipers and Rhino vipers. But I think the Ceylonese ((aka Sri-Lankan)) Palm Viper. The coloring is awesome. I saw someones website that had one and fell in love with it.
Go to www.venomous.com and part way down the page there is a link to a Ceylonese Palm Viper. Click there and look at that snake. It is my new definition of beauty, in snakez at least.
After seeing picturez of Auntie Morticia, Stopstaringatme, Blis5 and all the other photos posted i've come the the realization that beaty can be defined as :any of the female memberz of rtb.
Thade.

I would keep an Adder. Simply because it's the only venemous snake native to the UK (we've only got 2 snakes to our credit )

Wow, I know i came late, but what a great topic?!!
Well, since you said reguardless of size and level of toxicity, i guess the natural response for me would be a King Cobra. Their size is the thing i love. Just the sight of a 15' snake that can rear up 5-6' off the ground to look me in the eye is awesome.
More realistically, because of their beauty and low chances of depriving me of life are the copperheads...and even more realistic and desireable is the rear-fanged Mangrove snakes.
Also, i cant leave out the rattlers, which have their own mystique...but if i had to settle on a species i would want as my very own, it would be the Eastern Timber - which i find to be the most attractive, and also maybe the sidewinder which is so unique that i couldnt ignore it!
Honorable mention goes to the Fer-De-Lance for their size and legendary temperament as well as the Gaboon Viper for its beauty!

Whoever told you that gabbies are docile lied to you. They can be deceptively sluggish, but definitely are not docile in the least regard. They tend to bbe explosively hissy, and wil lash out with very little provocation.

I don't mean to get under anyone's skin, but will/can we please start saying eyelash pit-viper, or neotropical eyelash viper, or eyelash palm viper? Cause my favorites are gettin' dissed up and down this board! To cut down on the confusion i will install scientific as well as geograhical common names.
Atheris ceratophora (also known as a eyelash viper, horned bush viper, and african eyelash viper.
Any Atheris for that matter!
Now we know why binomial nomenclature is so important, don't we?
Entropy,
Alex
