Hi
I just a herp shop here in the u.k. that sells de-venomed hots!!!!
I decided to learn more on the subject..and found out some disturbing things.
They take the hots and inject silicon it their venom glands to stop them producing venom!!!
This is outrageous
I dont know if there is a previous post on this subject if their is tell me where to find it cos i am V.angry!!
If people aren't ready for a hot then they shouldn't be having ops on it just to satisfy their need!!!
A hot is an enormous responsibility! nobody should be allowed to sell or prefrom that opperation.
Its actually illegal in England and no vets will do it so they have to be brought from the states!!!
If your outraged too then write about it

How does a hot eat if it has no venom? I hope those people know they would have no choice but to feed dead prey and even then would a hot eat it if it doesn't strike at it first? BW or Jules might know that one.......Anyway on to the more pertinent topic, wouldn't the silicon hurt the snake, like a blocked mucous gland hurts people? Have they even thought of that? I agree completly about only the very skilled should be able to own hots, its like getting a grizzly bear as a pet and having it declawed and toothed, what is the point of having such an awesome animal if you are only going to disfigure it? Any form of harm to animals really irks me especially when it is done for ignorant people's amusement...........UGH. I'm done.

Actually, they will eat, but the venom is usually the first part of the digestion process.
The surgeries also leave deformed heads, massive scarring and a shortened lifespan.
I'm sure that someone else will be along to tell more..
But many here in the states do NOT condone that practice of mutilation at all.

Venomoid Opinions
Venomoids and Herpetoculture
Here are two topics I posted on the ven forum. Pretty much states my opinion.

Keeping and creating venomoids is raping nature to suit the needs of ego maniacs and idiots who just want to say "I own a Cobra!" If a dealer sells venomoids, I say, buy NO HERPS from them, period!

Great points Brian!
And like you and many say, if you can't handle hots, stick to cornsnakes!

Oh come on now...if both the buyer and seller are willing to castrate themselves to demonstrate that they truly understand the snake's condition...maybe it wouldnt be such a bad idea. Or is it the buying and selling of voids that proves you already have?
