Personally, I think it would be nice to see the hobby regulate itself by collaborating with various state and national agencies to initiate a nation-wide permit system. No buying or selling without appropriate permits, at least when it comes to hots. I'd also like to see formal facilities of educational instruction set up, with reasonable expectations, as far as hitting the books, hook-on handling experience, reasonable fees, timeframes, etc. Also, proof of stocking your own AV before buying isn't too shabby an idea.

That is actually a fairly complex question.

Sure it is, but it's a pretty good one, though. Working with something like a Mangrove would be completely different than working with a Mamba. I don't think you could base the permit strictly on the type of venom, as far as neurotoxin or whatever. Maybe a seperate one just for rear-fanged. But I think he had a great question.

Would you be willing to train, within your expertise, someone for a fee. Maybe set up a small group course and require a specific number of hours to qualify. Florida requires 1000 hours. Maybe a state sanctioned program, where various keepers qualify for sanctioning. Fees could be charged. Just thinking out loud.

i think the state should set standards for buyers, they must have a license to own venomous reptiles, if you really want a hot you should have to know everything about them to get a license, and they should make the test to get a license really hard, it should also be illegal for sellers to sell to anyone without a license to own hots, this would eliminate the problem! it isnt that complicated,

The idea is not complicated; putting the regulatory system in place and setting the protocol for those regulations and how they are governed is the difficult part. Even if it is done at a federal level, each state could have its own laws, then down to the municipal level, then.. then...
It's not near as clean cut as one might think.

Craig's question was complex. Requiring species specific training is not going to cover varying individuals within the species. Timbers/canebrakes are usually fairly easy going and ride a hook well. Come hook mine! Training with a mamba would better suit getting ready for this particular animal. He's crafty and quick and pretty homicidal. You keep lots of emeralds, Craig. Are they all alike? It would be too much to regulate too. "You are trained for a Puff Adder! What are you doing with a Gaboon?" Crap like that would get old quick.
Training in groups? No never. Not in my snakeroom. Besides, I need to be retrained too. I just witnessed a 3 1/2 foot canebrake (guess what one ) launch a 4 foot straight up vertical strike from the bottom of a garbage can. I didn't know they could do that! I do now though ...whew. Glad I wasn't using a 2 foot ultralite lol

And that's why I won't keep hots. I'd have a heart attack too quick!
