Great picture Gus, as for photography critique I like the color's that are reflected from the lighting. Great photo!
As for the snake, its amazing looking. I would fill my whole entire camera with pictures of that guy.

I think a herp image is superior if it reflects how the animal might be found or appear if it was encountered in nature.. with these guys in particular until you touch them they usually sit completely still, they're great subjects (that's why so many are killed on the road), only perhaps twitching the rattle, barely audible... It's all about details.. a good observer can get a feel for the habitat, habits of the animal and even the time of day from that pic.

Anyway.. if you look closely, that is a very tiny rattlesnake.
