Wow, you really can't get your hands on 1? I've seen many of places to buy them, pretty sure they'd be wild caught but with something your not gonna handle anywase, i don't see a major major difference.. if its your first ven though like me, id def try to get a captive bred.. they'd be more used 2 having humans around an stuff ya kno? still not safe, but won't be as stressed when living around our annoyin asses

OK, here is the deal. I am going to start a new thread because this brings a real issue into focus and it needs to be adressed logically. There a lot of people intersted in hots. As for my opinion on your abilities personally, I do not know enough to make an educated judgement. You may be or you may not be. You have to realize that hots are just like any other snake in one respect. Once you get one, you WILL get more. And generally, they are going to get more dangerous. The most important thing is to NEVER think to yourself "Well, it's only a ______, it can't kill me"
As a side note, most ven dealers will not sell (and cannot sell) to people under 18. Most keepers will not sell or give away a hot unless they are sure that you are capable. I fall into this last catagory. I do not even do much training. I have only trained one person, and he was carefully selected. He was the only person that I have ever met personally under 21 that I thought could handle it. He is 14 and sophmore in college with a true passion for herps. By the time he is 25 he will have more book knowledge on reptiles than any of us. But he lacked experience. That is what I gave him. After about 15 or 20 hours of hands-on training, he caught his first hot, and anetheristic Pygmy Rattler (my first hot too). The snake and the kid are doing great, and despite his age, I feel confident in his abilities. I would not have given him a hot, but I knew that he would get one from the wild, so all I could do was teach him as much as could. You can only learn so much from books, you have to see the procedures first hand. And have someone who is willing to spend the time to teach you proper husbandry. I trained for 2 years before I got a Pygmy. I will end here and beging a new thread ont he subject of getting into hots.

Although I know i have stated numerous times that i would want a pyg or a copper, and I'm going to sound like a hipocrit for this. But I really don't think its a good idea to put venemous caresheets out on RTB. Putting out caresheets in a way would make us lika Steve irwin type then. saying its ok to have venemous and that its safe to own venemous. I would much sooner recomend spending time under a qualified hot herper. I wouldnt take a pyg, unless I have had spent time with someone like BW. I consider myself to be very safety conscious when it comes to reptiles, including non venomous. I just plain don't want to get bit period.
So I vote no on the caresheets.
I do vote yess for finding a good Hot Education class/seminar with some tools on experience (notice i didn't say Hands on experience)

It's not the problem of finding one... It's the problem of having one delivered to a state which all vens are illegal to own.
I am trying to get this person to send me one in a box disguised for something else but who knows. If i had a connection down FL/GA way then i could set a delivery up.
Kinda sucks ya know.

And yes, Ed. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL I EVER POST VENOMOUS CARESHEETS. It is literally a lisence to kill. This is not the place for that. They belong on a site for venomous keepers only. If someone has something, I will post tips, and I guess you could combine lots of comments to make a skeleton caresheet, but I would not make it that easy. To find care, you have to know people who keep them. That also insures that you are at least a little educated in venomous. If you have vens and are not a member of the SHHS, you do not need hots.

Man... that does suck! I suppose if i was to drive across the state line after picking up something that it would be the same definition?
Yep, no worries BW.

I knew CobraFands has been lurking a little
HJ, you have to understand that you were talking about shipping and keeping illegal animals. That is very serious. Especially with venomous. I don't blame Fangs for his comments. We walk a fine line in hot herps. But after speaking to you, I do not think that you would do it

I just got done reading your ARE YOU READY FOR A HOT thread BW.. My reasoning for wanting a hot is purly fasination and respect.. I am just amazed at the attitude, everything about a venemous.. I do know that I am smart enough to RESPECT that animal like its a man holding a loaded gun at my head.. Believe it or not, today at school we actually encountered a pigmy, very tiny, maybe 3 inches, must of been a baby.. Only had about 1 rattle on it though not that even means anything.. Immediatly i got everyone away from the animal, got me a stick and held it by his tail.. I managed to get its head hanging over a lunch tray before I got my hands on to ensure it couldn't double back on my fingers.. I got it safely into the woods, with a lot of OMG!!! coming from teachers and kids.. I wanted to throw that thing in a sandwhich rubbermaid so badly, lol but i didn't.. All i had been thinking about was this thread since I posted it an i did realize, i wasn't equipped to keep that animal.. #$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^$%^& at myself for letting it go but it was something I had to do.. Anywase, after reading your thread though you managed to put doubt into my mind only on 1 part.. I'm not ignorrant an respect the animals enough to know, i will not keep 1 without proper training.. For that very reason and knowing I have no1 to give me that training I have changed my mind...
1 thing to you though.. How can you Ven keepers scare people away from something so much that you yourself love doing?

To answer you question for BW. He's currently busy cleaning the hot room. Ven keepers, in my experience, scare people away from keeping them because there are so many people our there who do not know what they are doing and wind up being the latest news story. These are the people who they are trying to discourage.
I am glad to hear that you have reconsidered getting a pygmy, but I am never going to tell you not to get one. Wait a few years, gain experience, arrange for the perfect set up. This is not something to rush into. They are quite fascinating and they are one of the most awe-inspiring animals on this plant, but it takes a lot of time and experience to get to the point of owning on.
Personally, I have only been training for the past 10 months. I still have a long way to go.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I just read up on this post and was a little surprised.
To anybody who has a problem with the way i addressed the earlier post in this topic. I didn't word it right but at the same time i am not looking for an excuse. Grill me all you wish. I say take a pill will and just chill.
It is called finding out information... I aint silly willy.
I admit. I am not ready and so i will do what i can to be able to have this privilage. I wont argue due to the realistic side of this issue and will let it go. Thanks for the warning anyway. Be cool.

I just wanted to say that I have more repect for you now, because you actually admitted you are not ready. It takes a lot to say that.
Not to many people say that. They are set in getting one that they do not think of what can happen. BW is right, there are to many people that get vens that are not ready. They take a hit and it becomes that much closer that we all have to have a permit, or worst of all a ban on all reptiles. So I hope you understand the reason why I said what I said. And no hard feelings.
