A reminder of what some venomous snake bites can do to you....
I must say these pics are pretty grotesque, just to warn you.
I can see why sometimes treating venomous snake bites can cost you $50,000 or more... This guy had about 10 surguries or so.

But guys, lets not put the hot keepers down because that link was probably a worst case senario, especially since it was a rattlesnake.

That right there is a classic case of a fasciotomy after a severe pitviper envenomation. Usually, just an out dated and harmful practice is not needed. But again the problem again is with surgeons who will come in and try to convince yourself, or your loved ones that a fasciotomy is the best way to go. It is usually complete BS and that is just another money maker. A friend of mine was bitten in 2004 by a N. Florida locale Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus h. atricaudatus) and his symptoms were 95% straight nuerotoxic. Even with the mild swelling which was in his hand, the doctor tried to say he needed to have a fasciotomy. Well, my friend did not take kindly to that and said if the doctor bought a knife close to him he would take it and shove it somewhere inproper to say on this forum =) A good rule of thumb to go by, if your finger nail tips are still pinkish/purple, you will not need a fasciotomy. Many doctors are very quick to use the knife, and a prominent hospital here in Florida already has quite a few lawsuits against it just for that reason. Just have someone ready to speak for your wishes in the event you are unconscious and cannot speak for yourself. While it is a very bad and grusome sight, I have seen worse images related to car accidents than that =)
