Gotta love the Gabbys they have such huge heads. I really respect someone that is willing to keep a hot and does so successfully.

Love the videos bro!!
I have wanted a Gabby since I first got a look at them on Animal Planet!!
Of course I figure I will never have one, but it doesnt hurt to WANT to own one!!<~~has attention span of a nat!!
Question..
How would you compare the strike range and speed of a Gabby versus the Puff adder and the Natas??
Again great vids...My little girl LOVED the "Gabby takes a stroll" video!

i had a rhino viper (similar to gaboon) a while back and at 3ft, it could easily lunge 3ft....most snakes strike is 1/3 to 2/3 their length.....these guys are designed for huge strike distances
i've only seen others' puffs but they didn't have the comparative range that my rhino did.....i remember dropping a f/t mouse in the center one day and it was about 16" away....it hit the ground, the rhino lunged, hit the mouse and carried another 2ft...........i've kept a lot of US pitvipers but that was VERY impressive

i'm nowhere nearly as experienced with these as others in this thread, but it really impressed me the first time i saw my rhino strike.....like someone threw her almost lol......i've read they retain fecal matter to give them a better base to lunge from, and that would factor in to why they can launch like they do

Hmmm, I have seen Bitis do some rather impressive acrobatics but I have never seen a rhino, gaboon, or puff strike its full body length... Maybe two thirds with its back end proped up against a cage wall but never its full length...

Yes they are... But they are also some of the fastest and hardest hitting strikers as well...
Like you mentioned, the theory behind the fecal matter retention is that it acts as a balast or anchor... Without the extra weight, their back ends may shoot out behind them, weakening and shortening their foward strike... The added weight would also increase accuracy...
This however, is mostly theory and speculation but well worth the mention... I happen to believe this is the case...
Anyway, carry on my friends...
Welcome to the site Al... Good to see you here!!!

You know when i was over last year BW, you kept saying "yeah i need to vaccum", and " it's a mess! sorry about that". There was some mulch on the floor from well likely just opening cage doors and what not. The whole time i was thinking "gd this place is spotless, dunno what he's talking about!". For your "Thrashed Hot Room", I'm afraid I need to see photo's :P
