Here are some of my Pygmy Rattlers.
Here is one of the 6 new little babies.
And a comparison shot of the little fang face.
I am not looking forward to force feeding mouse legs down their gullets
At this size, their fangs are about the size of their heads! They tend to grow into their fangs.

If I can get them started, they should be fine. They are only a week old, so it is hard to tell. I have pretty good luck with them though. Getting them started is the hard part. Force feedign mouse legs works better in the long run rather than cricket frogs, which they take right away. If I give a few meals of mouse legs, they tend to take pinkies more readily. Then, it ia all uphill

uggg....force feeding little pygs...that's gotta be one of the least desirable aspects of keeping venomous snakes...
very colorful little fellows, though.
keep us posted on their progress...
good luck,
Steve

When you force feed something that small, how do you protect yourself? Do you wear gloves? I would think that would just make it even harder to deal with something that small. I know how big on safety you are and I think that Pygmys are great little snakes (although I am no where near ready to own one) so I would like to hear how ya do that.
Thanks,
Ted

If some is GOING to keep hots, you cannot stop them. But there are soem things to consider when getting a first hot (aside from the obvious danger). Let's see how the Pygmies rate
Antivenin Available: Pygmy envenomation can be treated with either Wyeth Crotalidae Polyvalent or Crofab. These are common throughout the U.S.
Potency of Venom: Pygmies are generally nonlethal. However, they cause a great deal of tissue damage.
Husbandry: Once they are on pinkies or fuzzies and established, the generally make good captives. Housing requirements are minimal (aside from secure).
Aggressiveness: Fairly nippy, will not hesitate to bite if threatened. Generally skittish, thus may not sit on a hook very well.
Now personally, I like aggressive venomous. It is better (IMO) to have a snake you know will strike so that you never get complacent about it. But from the information above, an adult or subadult and established Pyg may be an option. I would never recommend a neonate. They are too hard to get establishe and require a lot of hands on work.

Sorry, I never answered Zippy's question.......
Yes they are still very dangerous as neos. Not only are they very defensive (being babies) but their fangs are HUGE compared to their head. At that age, their fangs are about the same length as their head! They tend to grow into their fangs. My word! When I saw that snake compared to that quarter . . . Wow, I thought my Spooky was a small snake when I got her, hehe.
I don't want any Hot snakes, tho'. I like handling snakes too much.

As a general rule, neo pitvipers are more dangerous than adults in that you are more likely to get an envenomating bite if bitten. They lack the control to dose out venom like they can do as adults or the ability to dry bite.
