I've had days like this

This is why I prefer tall holding containers with a handle on top. This is a good representation of the handling you don't get to see on television. Sometimes, they just don't want to cooperate.

Tongs are a last resort. They risk hurting the animal and the snake tends to freak out when "grabbed". Plus, that is a big hunk of puff to get tongs around

Oh, I though they came padded now. You're right that is one short chunky snake. That guy reminded me of some words in an old CDB song and that adder "had him steppin and fetchin, like his head was on fire and his .... was catchin".

Holy cow.
I dunno, though...I think he should have "let it go" for that day after the first few botched attempts. That snake got way to aggrevated and who would blame it the way he kept tossing it around...
The hooks just didn't look strong enough, to me...with the weight of the snake, plus the hooks being so long, it would be really hard to support and maneuver such a heavy, thick (not to mention fast) snake.
Personally, I think that guy is lucky he didn't get tagged yet.
As to the snake, what a beauty !!!
I love those thick bodied snakes...which is why I love blood pythons. I used to have a Borneo (he died of an infection in his mouth) He was massive like that, but boy, could he MOVE. Lightening fast and HARD strikes. (feeding)
But he was puppytame and actually had personality. Still miss him terribly.

Well, I don't particularly care for the collapsable hook, but other than that it is a good example. He used double hooks and a holding container and did a pretty good job considering what he was working with. Things are not always graceful when working with venomous species because you can't just grab them like a boa. They move different, act different, and have to be dealt with different. What appears to be "tossing it around" is more a matter of weight distribution of the snake, gravity, the snake's movements combining. A familiar scene and a good example of how much effort can go into working with an unruly viper.
