One of my chequered garters just bit me and although the bite was insignificatn (14" snake), it stung a fair bit after for a minute or two. Are they mildly venemous?

No, but they do have some other things, like anti-coagulant type stuff in their saliva.

Not exactly venemous but are mildly toxic. I got bit on the lip by one bled an aweful long time and swelled pretty good too.
