Size Restrictions for PA Rattlesnake Roundup
Hi All,
As you may know, I'm pushing super hard to get some changes here in PA to help protect our native herps. The Lancaster Herp Society is very involved and we are well on our way to helping the PA Fish and Boat Commission with some of the new regulations. We do need your help. Some of the people that hold Rattlesnake Roundups got the commission to down size the length of our Timber Rattlesnakes that are allowed to be taken. We really need to get the length back up to the 42 inches!
Currently the commission is going with the length of 38 inches. We would like to protect all females from being taken if at all possible. At the length of 38 inches, you could be getting about 50% males and 50% females. This length is not long enough if we want to protect the females. Some people are hoping for 40 inches, but here again you would still be getting close to 25% females. At 42 inches, it is almost 100% males. So let's all work together and get ourselves heard that we would like to see the regs changed to 42 inches.
J esse of Forgotten Friend Reptile Rescue has made it easy for you to find where to go on the internet to give your comments. We just need to be heard. If you could please take a few minutes and write a short note at the link provided by Jesse, you would be doing a lot to help our local herps! The commission will go with the number of inches requested by the most people. So please help us get to the 42 inch mark.
Thank you!
Jan
Rattlesnake Stuff
**This email is a follow up to the Timber Rattlesnake stuff we were talking about at the May 2006 meeting. Like Norm had mentioned, the proposed minimum length to catch a Timber Rattlesnake is 38 inches. Originally it had been 42 inches, but the snake hunt folks were able to get it lowered to 38 inches. It is not officially written into law, however, and Norm and other conservationists would like to see the minimum length changed back to 42 inches. PA Fish and Boat Commission has set up a really easy way to leave comments about this issue, and other PFBC proposals. If you'd like to let PFBC know what you think about this, please click the link below and submit your thoughts about seeing the minimum length for Timber Rattlesnakes set back up to 42 inches, rather than 38 inches. Theoretically this would offer additional protection to females.

*bump keeping this thread alive because it looks like it's for a good cause...and i'm gonna throw my sarcasm in so be prepared* oh so what just cause i'm a guy snake i gotta die? that's messed up ya'll -.- ....but i suppose it wouldn't hurt to try to help...have you thought about pushing a "no-tools" law so that they have to catch the snakes with their bare hands? that would cut down on roundups i'm sure.

LMAO!!
I posted this for the PA members or any one else who may be interested in sending a comment about the roundups..
It was posted on an ARK thread, because we do get a few out of state visitors, although not as many as RTB.

Im totally ignorant about this. Why does it happen again. For cultural, economic, conservation reasons?

In the US the rattlesnake roundups initiated as a misguided attempt to rid areas of rattlesnakes. Since that time, they have become commercialized animal abuse.

Yeah, because everyone here knows how ferociously horrible a rattlesnake can be...I mean what with the whole sitting there minding their own business until a predator 500 times their size wants to pick them up and toss them around and shoot them at the end of the day. Would you rather have a rattlesnake to deal with or a drunken trigger happy idiot blasting away at whatever form of movement his saturated vision interprets as reptilian? Why don't we have dangerous trigger happy idiot round-ups?
