I live in PA...not really common for unusual snakes!
I did not see the head, but the body was a SHINY, very shiny, deep bronze color. It had diamond type designs all on back, I believe the diamonds were outlined in black. Very shiny & distinct colors. It was about the size in diameter of a square in a standard chain link fence (if that makes sense?) ....that's what it crawled into, an overgrown old dog kennel. It really happened so fast, before it dissappeared into the brush, but I did get a close look at it.
If I wasn't so afraid of snakes, I'd say it was gorgeous. But I'm concerned because I have dogs in neighboring kennels, plus I'm back there feeding & cleaning daily. On one hand, I'm thinking it will take care of any rodents that sometimes are attracted to dog food, but need to know if this snake is dangerous to me, my kids, or the dogs (large breed).
By my inexperienced description, if anyone can help, please either post or email me. THANKS!cadillac2@zoominternet.net

Could be a number of things. Sounds like a diamond back watersnake. if thats the case just hide your goldfish. Pa Is a little north for it to be a copperhead but suppose it could be possible. Size of a square in a chainlink fence is a pretty stout body. Any idea how long it is? Get a pic if you can.
Actually after reading the post again does sound allot like a copperhead with the stout body.

Northern Copperhead is well within PA and sounds like a decent fit for you description, both coloration wise and size wise.

Search Google.com for Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen, and see if that's your boy. They are venemous, but bites to humans are rarely lethal. Still, prompt medical attention is advised.

Unsure of effects on dogs...
