Whenever I see cobra pics I always wonder if any hot keepers are interested in the "spitting" cobras....

Hows Naja pallida {red spitting cobra} and Naja nigricollis nigricollis {black neck spitting cobra} for spitters
Yes i love them got 4 diffrent species of spitters. Other than having to wear face protection not really any harder and in some snakes easier than other cobras to tend to based on temperment

Even though you have to wear a facemask, do they still envenomate their prey with fangs? And what are the mechanics behind the "shot" of venom? How are they able to achieve their distance?

It's purely defensive as i understand it, and they're able to achieve the distances because of the actual design of the fangs. The hollows are shapped differently, allowing the spray.
As i understand it... if i'm wrong i'll know soon

yes they still juice the prey with fangs.
I guess the best way without a pic of the fangs to post is this/ Imagine your garden hose when you kink it and it breaks. The water or in their case venom is shot out by force. with the hose its the presure in the hose with the snakes its a muscular contraction pushing the venom gland. the fangs have a hole near the base facing forward. thats about the simplest example i can think of off hand.
They do not always spit however. the Blackneck hasnt spit in a good year and is actually a very good snake to work with in temperment and attitude. Rides hooks great and goes right in the catch can" trash can" comes out with ease and right in to her hide box.
One interesting note. Monacle cobras can spit to a degree but its from excreting venom at the same time they exhail which will shoot venom a very short distance. but they are not a trus spitter. just a niffty trick a few of them have learned.

Scarlet king eh! That sucks, but they just don't live forever and it is a good thing to recycle when you can and I am sure that the Coral was quite happy eating a snake that under other circumstances would possibly be eating him. Kind of an ironic meal.

We even pulled out the classic cobratoxin (a 3FTx (three-finger toxin)) from a bloody ratsnake!!
|
From http://venomdoc.com/ colubrid section of research!
Radiated ratsnakes anyone http://venomdoc.com/toxin_molecular_evolution.html
Food for thought
