What I would suggest is getting with someone who has alot of experience with hots and learning techniques from them. I started with a copperhead and a friend who has been keeping hots for 20+ years. He taught me alot before I ever did anything with the copper. He still supervises me doing most everything, offering better ways to do something and advice on how to be safer when dealing with these awesome creatures. Find someone you trust, who is experienced, and work with them for a little while. It makes a huge difference

Then you should wait until you have access to someone who has experience to teach you. Hots aren't something you can just jump into, esp. being young. Imagine the headlines: *16-year-old boy dies from a bite from his pet rattlesnake* You would essentially be justifying the new laws they're trying to make there (Could be wrong on this... does it apply to hots?) And how far away do you think the nearest hospital with mojave antivenin is?

not to be rude... but if you need a caresheet on a hot, you don't need a hot yet.

also, i believe the proposed NC ban includes nonindigenous vipers, just so you know. (jeez, what a crapper of a law if it passes).

OK, I guess I will jump in here. Please do not take offense, but knowing what I do about you just from your posts (since we have not met, my knowledge is admittedly limited), I can say with all honesty that I personally feel that if you get a Mojave, it WILL KILL you. I do not think that you realize the potential of this animal. The Mojave has a more toxic LD50 (measurement of venom potency drop for drop) than a Black Mamba! And it injects copious amounts of venom. I do not think that ANYONE would recommend a Mojave as a first hot. And I would not respect anyone that would.
Have you read my article on getting into venomous?
http://redtailboa.net/forums/showthread.php?t=9618
I went ahead and made it sticky.
Also remember that just because someone has been keeping venomous for many years, does not mean that they know what they are doing. I know people that have kept for 10 years that i would not trust with a Corn Snake.
Please read that article, then revisit this thread. I will let that speak for itself for now.
