oops Rattlesnake shed...left a little surprise
doh! This is the little canebrake Morti, Bry, Trinitywolf and others caught while out herping the last night of the Coffee county camping trip a couple of years ago. BW took it home and a few months later it ended up terrorizing my snakeroom. Brian and I tubed it and carefully probed...perhaps a little too carefully. All this time, I thought I had a female...even named the poor guy "Rosa"...but "Rosa" shed tonight and when I pulled the shed out, I noticed right away...This ain't no female rattler. Check out the protrusions at the vent. That's hemepene shed!
Here he is all coiled up in the branches of his deer skull climbing toy/cage decor...that's his fresh shed behind him.

and here is the part of the shed that made me go hmmm
I still love him just the same...he's just gonna get a lot bigger than I anticipated lol.

Perhaps that's not a hemi shed, maybe calling him "Rosa" over the last few years caused them (it) to fall off.
Cool photo!

Nice pics, is it common for male snakes to have a hemi shed?

No...the skin of a snake is all-encompasing. It is all one piece and even extends into nostrils and heatpits if they have heat pits. However, the small inward skin covered parts that shed ...the shed usually breaks off and goes unnoticed.

I do save the interesting ones...any complete copperhead or rattlesnake shed and a few large boa or python sheds...and any smaller snake with a nice pattern. Dumerils and rainboa boas usually have nice pretty sheds. I put them in a ziplock and label them and usually end up giving them to science teachers when I do an educational program...or just let Rob take them to his science teacher.
