I am of no help here, but I am thinking either a coral snake of some sort or a colubrid haha. All I know is that if that snake lived here in Texas I would pick it up, but the red on black rule dosen't apply in other areas of the world

i'm interested in knowing why you would pick a snake up by the tail without knowing whether it was venomous or not beforehand. you don't have a tv show or own a zoo in austrailia, do you?lol

Thanks...
Thanks Julius..you have been very helpful thanks...you sure know your snakes. and irishsnakes i didnt actually pit that snake up bt its tail... it wasnt as simple as just see the tail and pick it up for a pic..lol...i actually let the head go for the picture as i was putting him down...but im no expert..thats for sure i make mistakes all the time...BUT if picking a snake up by the tail would get me my own show or zoo...and get paid millions of $$$$ then sign me up....

There are also some tricolored hognosed snakes in that area but their bands are usually more distinct. However both of these species display a wide variety of patterns and color even in a tight locale. It's hard to say with certainty exactly what you are holding with just these photos except that it is not a coralsnake (the only tricolored venomous snake in that area) A good head shot would quickly rule in or out a hognosed snake. Did it have an upturned snout by chance? If it did, that would be a very unusual hognose. If it didn't then it's fairly safe to say that it's one of several ssp of oxyrhopus.
