This is just too odd.... yesterday at work I was talking to my supervisor, and he was telling me about how where he lives, there are lots of copperheads. Usually he sees them out in his yard, or in the garden. One day he came across one in the garden eating a YELLOW SQUASH!! The snake had just about halfway swallowed it-- Maybe he thought he was eating an egg or something? Anyway, just thought I would share.

No, I do know he's actually a pretty straight up guy... oh, well-- I know if I'd seen it I would have taken pictures to prove it!

Just remember that noone is mocking you for repeating the story. It is just pretty farfetched. Nor are we saying that he was lying. Perhaps, more than likely, just mistaken in what he saw.

Guess it was just an interesting story.... although I have to wonder what the copperhead was really eating (if he did really see anything)?

It is rare that a snake makes a mistake about prey to the point of actually swallowing it...but it does happen. If the squash was somehow scented by rat urine or something along that line and the snakes vision was impared...perhaps....Who would guess a boa would swallow a human heat pad? but one did recently. I don't discount the human error factor either...sometimes we think we see something that is entirely somthing else but...if the snake ate the squash, it isn't because it is a preference...it would have been a mistakeso don't go trying to feed your snakes veggies. Oh, no, please don't think I meant that the snake was eating vegetables on purpose! I would hope that it's pretty common knowledge they don't-- (And I don't see my snakes complaining about their rodent foods...)
