First of all, I don't recommend the keeping of venomous species for anyone. And I am VERY selective of who I train in handling and husbandry. But my first hot was a Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake.

My first venomous snake was a northern copperhead. Now a days whenever I get the itching to keep venomous I take a look at this page: http://www.venomousreptiles.org/articles/72
When you keep venomous snakes it's not a matter of *if* you'll get bit, it's only a matter of *when*.

John, that is one of the best articles I've read in awhile. Maybe some people will have a change in plans after reading it.

No doubt... That article is definatly mandatory viewing for the eyes of anyone thinking of dealing with venomous reps... if that doesnt 'persuade' you to keep your wits about you, nothing will... I also say thanx John..

If you look around the SHHS website that the article is on, there is a part II to that article. His wife wrote it It is noce to see two people perspectives on one incident. Anyone that emails me about keeping venomous, I send them that link. Works well. After that, you have to be really serious. Just so you all know, he is doing fine and is slowly getting use back in his hand.

Thanks for letting me know there was a part 2 of the article. Going to look for it. It was very interesting to me and one of the most "near death" experiences I have ever read.

Just a couple stupid questions for someone new to keeping snakes.....
Why in the world would anyone want to keep a venemous?
What enjoyment can come from a pet that cant be held like and might even go so far as inflicting death or serious injury to the hand that simply feeds it?

I don't own any venomous herps so I can't speak exactly to that, but I do own a variety of inverts with venom that is potentially medically significant ( Scolorpendra sp., A. australis, L. quinquestriatus, etc).
I find that often times these animals have behavior patterns which differ greatly from their non-/less-lethal cousins and are therefore interesting to observe while in their, albeit not wholly natural, habitats. I get much from simply leaving them where they are and observing them. I have a variety of fish too, none of which do I take out and hold, yet I get endless hours of relaxation from them. I want to hold an animal, I haul out a ball, an A. avic, etc.
The best part of this hobby, and it's relatives, is that there is something for everyone.
Enjoy,
J

I don't own any hots nor will I ever, but if you do that's cool. In my opinnion some of the most beautiful snakes are venemous. We like the bright colors or particular patterns that nature has put on hots to let other animals know to leave them be. Just my opinnion.

Many venomous species do have some of the most beautiful snakes around. People have different tastes. To me, I believe the top reason most people keep venomous is for research.
