Milking Snakes??
I am wondering how someone goes about learning where they can go to get information on milking snakes? Where do you send it for it to be processed into antivenom? What are the steps?

Milking venomous is one of the most dangerous procedures with venomous. There is realy no need for the average hobbiest to be milking. It is dangerous (to you and the animal) and you can severely damage tha animal if you do not know what you are doing. There is currently more than enough venom being supplied for research and AV production. Not to mention the fifty thousand dollars in equipment needed just to get it to a form that institutions accept.

Thanks, I was just wondering how or if I could contribute to those institutions. It sounds like they can't use straight venom. Thanks again for the information.

Jim Harrison is who you would want to talk to. The thing is, though.. he's always so busy! He has a Reptile Zoo here in KY and he provides a LOT of venom to be used for anti-venin. He and his g/f are very nice and interesting people if you can pin them down long enough to have a conversation, LOL.

No pun intended huh?lol
Must take a fairly large pin stick to do that :P
Definately not a good reason to get into hots, cuz what you'll produce would not be worth the risks.

D'oh! Hadn't realized I made a funny... heh. Nice catch!
Ed is correct. Jim has been declared clinically dead at least 3 times. It is a very dangerous job he has.

Milking is deadly bussiness. I beleive Bill Haast is upwards of 190 some odd bites now and Hunter is pushing the 40 mark, VanHorne as been tagged a few times as well. These men know the risk and take it but its put all of them on deaths door. Please leave it to them and never try it yourself, the risk is just not something anyone should ever do. If your interested in the process for just the curiousity of watching how they do it Animal Planet shows some Haast old videos as well as the University of Utah doing extractions. That is the safest way to do it. from your armchair in your house away from the pointy ends.
