Coral Snake Bites
In a recenst thread it was brought up about coral snake bites in the US. I spoke with Ernie from Venom One { Miami Fire Rescue} this weekend about it. There were 11 confirmed bites in the last year. 1/3 approx were children I did not get what the or how the circumstances were for the bites. Those numbers actually suprised me. Just thought people would like to know.

That's hardly a terrific number of bites though, especially when compared with say Dogs or even Cats. In fact I bet more people get bitten by Squirrels.

Don't you think many of those bites are because people try to pick them up? I am pretty sure most of the Rattlesnake bites here in California happen because people try to pick them up or get way to close even though the rattle warns them. We were in Arizonia and there was a small rattler in a bush ( next to a tourist spot at the Grand Canyon) and people were so close to this snake I stood back and looked for moment and walked by. I think people have no clue how quick they can strike and figure "it will never happen to them" sometimes it is their own fault when they get bite!

That is not a Coral AV Article. That is Protocol. It does not even mention in there that they no longer manufactur Coral AV and that current supplies are all nearing or past expiration.

More bites happen to children because snakes are "cool" or "pretty" same with adults. My own kids, who have been around snakes their whole life, wanted to pick up a rattler when we were in Oklahoma because they thought the rattle was "neat". Thats why sites like this and others are soooooo important, it's all about education, education, education!! Don't pick up wild snakes, there are plenty available in pet stores and rescues anyway. And no, my kids didn't wind up picking up the rattler, thank goodness I was there!

An interesting factoid: The first casualty of the American Civil War was caused by the bite of an eastern coral snake.
