Snake saves woman
29/06/2004 11:51 - (SA)
Riot Hlatshwayo and Victor Hlungwane
Giyani - A mamba came to the rescue of a young woman who was about to be "HARMED" [EDITED].
|
Quote:
The woman sharpened a knife on a rock and was about to "HARM THE VICTIM" [EDITED], when the snake appeared.
"The woman jumped up and shouted 'snake, snake!'".
She'd been bitten, so one of the men took the rope from Mashimbye's hands to make a tourniquet and stop the venom from spreading.
He then carried her to the car, possibly to take her to hospital, while Mashimbye leapt up and ran away.
She spent the night in the bush and found her way home on Sunday and reported the case to the police.
Provincial police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened.
He said three woman had been admitted to Elim hospital near Makhado for snake bites on Saturday, but all had died.
He said police would investigate if any of them was linked to the attack on Mashimbye.

Interesting story- we got the full unexpurgated version here. It appears to have been some sort of attempted cult kidnapping, whereupon she prayed, and god answered by sending her a mamba...
I've just acquired my first polylepis, a 6-month old male CB.
God never gave me mine though, had to swop a redtail for him

Here is another story/legend of a boy saved by a snake.
"About an Estonian boy - I at first heard that he must have been from Kuusalu - who is serving in Afghanistan and is a cook there, and then all the garbage and scraps of food he used to gather very carefully and he took them somewhere into a ravine near the kitchen, where the snakes lived. And these snakes were already quite friends with the boy, for they were used to the boy bringing food to them every day. But one night a big snake comes out of the ravine and coils itself around him and won't let him go. And, well, the boy was scared stiff and simply can't get off. The snake does not kill him, but won't let him go. And the boy is there in the snake's grip for the whole night and his hair turned white for fear. And in the morning when the sun rises the snake lets the boy go. The boy hurries back to his unit and finds all others killed at night. All others have their throats cut and he is the only one who survives. And, and then they say that the boy is back home and his hair is all white. (RKM, Mgn II 3934 (7) < Tartu - Recorded by O. Kõiva < Ellen Liiv, born 1930 (1986))"

Patience BW, this is Africa
Will have pics by 2moro, hopefully post on Sunday.
He is not the easiest little bugger to photo, wont stay still, not too
keen to stick camera in open cage.
Will get Tracy to hold him still ...
He's about 1m, with faint white bands down the side.
Incredibly alert snake-always sticks his head out of his hidey
when I come into his room
