I will never have to touch my hot...
If any potential hot keeper has ever said or thought this, stick with boas. THe time comes that EVERY snake will nee attention. And what a great example, PK has a RI! "Just tuber her" ...... easier said than done on over 6 pounds of Cottonmouth!
She looks calm enough.........................
Just getting her out of the cage. Boy looks pretty simple so far (except for the hook starting to bend!)
Well, she is on the floor now, all that is left is to tube her. Easy part, right?
"Boy, you are standing along way away!" From this angle, she doesn't look 4 feet! I know my snakes' strike ranges!
OK, this method generally works. But PK is not cooperating. she perpetually strikes anything that moves. She hit the tube so hard that she cut her mouth and almost knocked the tube out of my hand! So I try for the bucket method.
Not the most flattering pic of me But this method eventually worked. I have no idea how much time it actually took to get her in a tube. It seemed like hours.
But I finally got her!
And she got her injection.
This was Jessa's first injection! Talk about throwing her int he deep end.

PK was not happy. She thrashed and let loose of her bowels in a most projectile fashion. It was all I could do to hold onto her.
If you think that you will never have to come close to the sharp end if you get a hot........ don't get them.
If you think this looked like fun......... Don't get them.
If you think my hands were shaking alittle after the ordeal............ you are correct.

The first hot I ever worked with in a tube was an albino monocle cobra. You want to talk about filling my pants. It was SO easy to get lured by the beauty of the animal, until that hood comes up and you stop and realize just exactly what you're really dealing with. Your life is protected by a thin piece of plastic. Its not fun at all, but absolutely a necessary skill to have and to be willing and able to use. Venomous snakes sometimes need injections, sometimes they get a little mouth rot, sometimes they have retained eye caps or other bad shed sites - and just like any other snake, these things have to be dealt with by the keeper. Its not something to take lightly. These are not animals you can stuff in a locked enclosure and just toss them a mouse every week.

Its hard to just describe, theres a careful technique to it so you don't hurt them... but basically you pull them back out and drop them into a bin very quickly. Don't try this at home kids, we're trained professionals.

Guys,
Tubing any venomous snake, especially a viperid, from a top-down angle inside an enclosure as depicted is likely to take forever and annoy the snake.
My favorite big viper tubing tactic is to sneak up behind them while they are on a level surface like a table and slip a short tube over the head. They don't even see it coming if you move correctly. The really obstreporous ones get laid on a foam padded table and gently body pinned with a plastic bread board. About four to six inches of the head and neck is left exposed above the body pin, and the tube is slipped on rapidly while the snake is being slowed down by the gentle pressure. These tactics take only a few minutes and are less stressful to snake and handler.
