Why I don't feed live....
THIS is why I don't feed live! This JUST happened to MY animal, because I decided to feed live, just this once. What could happen?!
I put the mouse in as food for Mace(the vet said I should) but he refused to eat it... so the mouse started trying to nurse off of him. It was so cute, I had to take a couple pics. Then I fed the mouse to Mozaart, and cried as she constricted it. *sniffle... sniffle...*

I'm sorry but I have to ask
He is a beauty for sure but I have to ask a couple of questions if I may.
I noticed the heal mark on his back, was he a wild caught import originally?
Did the vet say why he suggested feeding rodent prey to an animal who is primarily a herbivore but can have very limited amounts of insect prey?

The mark is from the lady I rescued him from, who thought that the 100W heat lamp needed to be six inches off the substrate. >.< Lots of vitamin E oil is helping to clear it up nicely. He was not wild caught, no worries.
My vet, I've discovered, knows very, very, very little about husbandry, but I asked my reptile guy, and he said that one hopper mouse wouldn't hurt, and might even help to boost Mace's appetite, what with the new meds he's on. My vet says that Mace should eat two pinky/hopper mice a week, while my reptile guy(who is far more knowledgeable than my vet when it comes to husbandry) laughed aloud and saied "no. But, one pink or hopper mouse isn't bad once every few months or so, IF he wants to eat them."
I really appreciate this comment! Thank you!

Thanks for clearing that up.
I didn't think about a burn as a possibility for the old injury. Sometimes people absolutely amaze me with their lack of common sense. Your pics are a good proof of the fact that reptiles will allow themselves to be burned though.
Oh, just to clear the air, I have nothing against having WC imports. I just saw the scar scale which made me think it might have been an old predation wound. WC Imports are what provide the breeders for our projects so one day in the future no one will need to take them from their natural homes anymore. I hope.

I agree... however, I don't think WC imported Uros and beardies are neccessary, myself.
No need to clear the air at all. There are strong pros AND cons for WC imports. In some species, WC isn't a bad thing... in others, like uros and beardies, it is a bad thing, imo.
And yes... Most of my animals are a testiment to people's stupidity. Mozaart, for example, was a child's plaything. She's got(if I remember correctly) 15 identifyable and calcified broken ribs, and a few oddly discolored scale patches.
Medusa and Mr.Luna both were just ignored by their owner... Satan(possibly to be named Jonathan) my new JCP was bought for being pretty, then left in his cage and hasn't been handled in the past four years, from neonate until I got him.
Sometimes I think humans should just butt out all together, especially with reptiles. But... then I wouldn't be able to enjoy mine, and neither would all the responsible people out there. It's bittersweet, I suppose.

Does Mace eat dead hoppers? Maybe he did not trust the live one! And yet I believe and have heard that movement is a great stimulant to attack. Maybe he was just not hungry...

Maybe. I'm not sure. Honestly, I think the vet I have is wonderful with diagnostics and treatments, but that he doesn't know thing one when it comes to husbandry/diet. he means well, though.
I don't think I'm going to be taking his dietary advice. I had a good long talk with my local reptile guy(who owns a reptile store a few blocks away from my main house) and his eyes nearly popped out of his head when I told him about the diet reccomendations my vet gave me.
Yeah... good vet, really excellent, but unless his advice is medical, it's best to just smile and nod. "Oh, yes, that makes perfect sense. I'll feed my beardie nothing but earthworms from here on out, thank you so much for this relevant information to my beardie's broken toe!"

Uromastyx diet
That's an interesting pic. Uro's don't eat mice you know. In fact, their diet should be very low protein as they're primarily herbivores. Here's a link that will give you a lot of great diet alternatives for your mali:
Deer Fern Farms Uromastyx Care Page
I feed my egyptian uro mixed veggies, mixed with Mazuri tortoise diet and dusted with Miner-al and Uromastyx dust. The Mazuri tortoise diet should be softened with warm water and then mixed in with the veggies. It made a big difference in his growth development once he started eating it.
One more thing. Try dandelion flowers if you're having trouble getting your mali to eat. Mine loves the flowers, although he won't eat the greens. They're high in antioxidants and the right price too.
Good luck
Craigo
