51ft Reticulated Python?
I just watched a show on animal planet about unusually large animals...lions, cows, rabbits etc.
One of their largest animals was a 51ft reticulated python that weighs 985lbs. It lives in Makan (sumatra or something).
They had video of this snake and it is probably the largest snake I have ever seen.
Anyone else catch this show? It airs again tonight at 11pm eastern. Anyone heard of this snake before?

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
Far as I know, the largest snake ever was only 32 feet long. I'm tempted to call shenanigans/hoax on this one. At least until I see an aerial view next to something of known length AND the snake on a scale.
That's just me though. Not everything on tv(even animal planet) is true.

I agree with Xeik. Once on Wild Boyz they were in South America and went to see a "50 foot plus" snake ( I forget what kind it was exactly). They got there and disproved the locals' stories about it. I think it turned out to be about 27' or so.

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
Found some more info regarding this:
Indonesian villagers claim to have captured a python that is almost 49 feet long and weighs nearly 990 pounds, a local official said.
The Associated Press - 8:04 a.m. ET Dec. 31, 2003JAKARTA, Indonesia -
If confirmed, it would be the largest snake ever kept in captivity.
Hundreds of people have flocked to see the snake at a primitive zoo in Curugsewu village on the country’s main island of Java.
Local government official Rachmat said the reticulated python measured 48 feet 8 inches and weighed in at 983 pounds.
The Guinness Book of World Records lists the longest ever captured snake to be 32 feet. The heaviest — a Burmese Python kept in Gurnee, Ill. — weighs 402 pounds, the book said on its Web site.
The Indonesian newspaper Republika said the snake, which was caught last year but only recently put on public display, eats three or four dogs a month.
Reticulated pythons are the world’s longest snakes. They are capable of eating animals as large as sheep, and have been known to attack and consume humans.
The species is native to the swamps and jungles of Southeast Asia.

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
Yeah, looks like this was another hoax.
snopes.com: Big Snake
Several newspapers sent reporters to measure the snake...was only 23ft.
I'm not sure why I want just one of these stories to be true! A 50ft snake....would be really cool!

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
Just some bits and peices of what I have heard.
The natives beleive that the snake was able to change its size. (something in their religion I think)
To me I would deff. say its not true, but its part of their culture.

I love snake shows even if this is BS. Just set my DVR to record that bad boy. Anyone catch the NGC show that tested snakes squeezing power? Very cool.

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
I think I saw all of this like a year ago.
That snake does NOT look 30+ft if anything that retic is 25 tops.
Yes it prolly does eat 4 dogs a month but it shouldent really they should feed it an alternate food prey.
Maybe their is a 30+foot snake out their but we may never know.
Unless we find some real proof ( sheds, the snake, or the dead snake ) we cant really prove anything.
But yea thats one pretty big retic.

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
Last time I checked Marcy was still the longest snake in captivity (many people quote Bob Clarks Fluffy 2 but Marcy reliable measured in at over 25 feet long in 2005 (not bad for a Sulawesi). I remember seeing pictures of Notah Howe's 25 foot Sula but I cannot confirm she is 25 foot but she definetly looked gigantic in the pics I saw.

and the only accurate way to measure a snake is alive because when their dead they can be stretched so that when they measure it is longer same thing with sheds

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
There has been no true proof that an retic has consumed a human. Its almost unbelievable. A snake can't get there mouth over our baulky shoulders...even a child would prove hard to swallow.

Re: 51ft Reticulated Python?
I have to agree on everything in that post they can certainly kill a human but to the point of swallowing it is just not happening i have been told since they can eat antelope with horns they could eat a human but the broadness of a humans shoulders is broader than a antelope's horns.
