I heard this rumour but thought it was all hooey because I have also heard that the average person ingests at least seven spiders per year. That seemed much more believable and obviously no one has died from accidentally eating a daddy- long legs.

ROTFL, Yes I heard that on growing up and I am pretty old so it has been around for a long time.
The truth is that the creature most correctly and commonly called a Daddy Long Legs is of the Order Opiliones and is not a spider at all. They feed on rotting material and have no fangs.
Poor guys, I'll bet if they could think they would think they got a bad rap looking so much like a spider at quick glance.

Re: Daddy Long Legs most venomous spider
I've always been told that... I don't think I ever believed it though.

Re: Daddy Long Legs most venomous spider
If everyone that is still confused would reread Brett's post, it would clarify things alot. Brett was right, the things that everyone thinks is a daddy longleg-that has no abdomen-, is not a spider, and eats plant matter. The things that were originally referred to as daddy longlegs are spiders, but cannot puncture human skin with their fangs. Josh

Re: Daddy Long Legs most venomous spider
They actually debunked this myth on mythbusters. It was a rather good episode.

Re: Daddy Long Legs most venomous spider
"i was told...growing up on a farm that if you picked on up by one of its legs...it would raise one leg and point you to where the lost cows where! oddly one leg always raised up...but alas we had no cows."
lol. Very cute.
And Julias, you are always a wealth of knowledge!

Re: Daddy Long Legs most venomous spider
My stepson's teacher recently told him this myth. Wow, it's hard convincing a 9 year old that his teacher is wrong.
