flower petals for aquatics
hey i was just wondering if flower petals would be an okay snack for aquatic turtles. i don't know why they wouldn't be since they can have dandelions and many herps eat flower petals but i wanted to double check. i was thinking about carnations, roses, daisies, mums, you know - the kinds you find in the cheaper boqeuts at walmart and stuff. thx!

I would not recommend feeding any type plant unless you know it harmless to the animal. You can find a list of toxic plants and other information here: http://www.anapsid.org/mainplants.html

I apologize if my post came across as condescending, it was not given with that intent.

Also remember that the flowers bought from a florist or store may have chemicals on them. I don't think I'd chance it unless they were from my own garden where I knew what had been sprayed on or around them.

Flowers bought for decorative purposes are sprayed with, among other nasty things---flower perfume spray! They do this to make the flowers smell more appealing. I found this out when trying to find some flowers for my beardy.
Be careful.

I imagine they would also be force grown with all sorts of nasty chemicals. I doubt that would be an instant issue, but possibly could create a long term toxicity.
Just me being paranoid here. :P

we're cool, john.
hmm. you guys bring up some good points. the thing is, i've been purchasing walmart flowers for our 2 iguanas and prehensile-tailed skink every few weeks for a couple years and they've never gotten sick. of course, they aren't turtles. maybe they're more hardy.
maybe i'll start growing my own flowers for my herps. i love gardening anyhow.
