Hi, I also live in IL and have a pet common snapping turtle named Fluffy. The only laws about snappers is that you have to have a special permit for the Alligator Snapper. Also you cannot take a common snapper out of the wild without a fishing license an you can only have I think up to eight of them or something. Other than that you can definately have them and personally I think they are awesome turtles to keep. Of course handle carefully.

They are awesome! I adore my Fluffy. He is still really tame too. I have had others before and they were all nice except a rescued adult that was wild. Definately cool turtles though.

Actually to legally collect herps in IL, I believe you need a hunting licence. i could be wrong. Not sure if snapping turtles are hunting or fishing. Just make sure they are not protected in the state.

A hunting license... well they told me I could collect garters and turtles with a fishing license as long as I didnt collect something protected such as Blandings...but they could have told me wrong too I guess. By they I mean the local Ag Department.

Ok I went to that site, common snapper is not listed as one you cant keep and just to verify it is fishing license to wild collect them it said "must posses valid fishing license to collect frogs and turtles"
But anyways there is no need to wild collect anyways, there are people who breed them right in Illinois. I can give you the e-mail and website for the breeder I got my Fluffy from if you dont have a baby snapper yet and want one, the breeder is in IL!
